COVID-19 Affects AGIF Conferences
American GI Forum 2020 National Conference Postponed – Texas State Conference Cancelled!

American GI Forum of Texas, Inc. AUSTIN, Texas –
Mr. Larry Romo, National Commander, and the American GI Forum (AGIF) National Board of Directors, on a request from host of the 2020 AGIF National Conference Texas Commander Ceasar Ruiz and the AGIF National Conference Chair Gil Rodriguez have agreed to postpone the 2020 National Conference scheduled for July 30 to August 1, 2020 in San Antonio, Texas until the summer of 2021. It was a decision based mostly on the COVID-19 Crisis that has shaken the entire Nation and the difficulty of getting definite commitments from speakers, sponsors and delegates. The 2020 National Mid-Year in Mighigan had been postponed earlier byi the National Board.

“The American GI Forum National Board of Directors voted today to postpone the 2020 AGIF National Conference as requested by the host, the AGIF of Texas," National Commander Larry Romo stated. "To assure the safety of our members, families and friends against this pandemic we will schedule the 2021 AGIF National Conference to be held in San Antonio sometime in the summer. Please stay safe and may God Bless the AGIF, you and the United States of America!”

The Commander also indicated that the decision was made by the National Boarda of Directors. He also indicated that he wanted the request from Texas and his response be posted.

In Texas, Mr. Roy Reyes & Mrs. Dee Leal, State Conference Co-Chairs have informed us through Roy that the San Antonio and Houston Chapters, Hosts of the State Conference for 2020 have decided that due to the coronaviris crisis the timing at this time is not practical nor realistic to hold the Conferences, scheduled for March 30 to May 3. In the best interest of all concerned it was best to cancel. They have advised the Hotel that they are opting out of their contract and expect the hotel to honor their request.

Roy has asked the the state consider the San Antonio Miguel Hernander Chapter for next year’s Conference. A scheduled State Board of Directors meeting for October will give final determination to their request.

We continue to be in uncharted territory at this time but the State office continues with essential businesses and will keep everyone posted on all updates throough our website. The Texas National Conference Committee will continue to work to make sure that the members continue receiving the latest information updates on a timely basis.

All materials, such as Brochures, Budget and schedules in place will be saved and updated. Some information had been mailed to members, guest and speakers. We will inform all concerned on the postponement and hope our sponsors and guest will respond possitively to our notices. Materials and information for next year will be sent when firm dates and schedues are set. There are no plans to change the venue, the theme and the scheduled events at this time.

The Hotel has cooperated and understood our concerns and have agreed to postponement of the event due to the crisis. They are willing to accommodate us in 2021 during the same time period.

“We want to thank National Commander Romo and all members of the National Board for taking this urgent matter and making a swift decision. This will make it easier for the Conference committee to reschedule events without the pressure of having to honor unnecessary obligations and avoid liabilities,” State Commander Ruiz stated. “Gil Rodriguez and his committee will continue to meet whatever commitments necessary to assure success in 2021.”

Please continue to monitor our website for updates on this crisis and on Forum matters. If you have any questions contact the National Commander, Texas State Commander or the Conference Chair. All conference registrations and sponsor funds will be returned.

Below is a copy of the request for postponement Letter from Texas and the response letter from National Commander Larry Romo.
